TOCC Grad Focuses on the Positive

By Martha S. Lee

Four years ago, Francisco found herself a single mother of four children working customer service jobs to make ends meet. She had left high school when her first child was born. Her career options seemed limited without a
high school diploma or GED. She realized that she wanted to set an example for her children of being committed to education. They were growing up and might graduate from high school before her if she didn’t start soon!

Once she made her decision, Delia enrolled in the Pre-College/GED Program at Tohono O’odham Community College. She studied hard and earned her GED within a year of starting the program at TOCC’s Wiṣag Koṣ Maṣcamakuḍ (Hawk’s Nest Campus), in spring 2018… Read more.

Persistence of O’odham woman proves that it is never too late to get started with your education

By Martha S. Lee

In August 2020, Saraficio reached out and invited Armenta-Vega to join the GED class that was meeting in real time online. The five students and the instructor met every day in their Zoom room. Most of them, like Olga, were working on math. Previously she had been intimidated by math, but now she approached this subject with an air of discovery.

Olga learned geometry concepts such as the Pythagorean theorem by drawing shapes and watching Saraficio diagram and solve problems on a white board. The winter of 2020-2021 was the hardest, with hurdles like family illness and the heat in her home going out. Yet Olga was determined to graduate this year. She practiced and practiced and then took the mathematics GED test in April 2021. She passed! Read more…

Tohono O’odham Community College’s First Student to Complete the College Credit Pathway for High School Equivalency

By Delores Saraficio

TOCC recently had its first student complete the CCP. Monique started the GED program in the summer of 2018. Monique had dropped out of high school three years earlier and says the bad learning environment made it difficult to care about her education. She felt that she was being treated unfairly. Jokingly she says it was difficult to focus since she was a pretty girl surrounded by a lot of boys. Monique felt the GED program was a way for her to move forward. She was eager to learn, which was evident in her near-perfect attendance. Still, she felt that she was not learning what she needed to achieve her future goals.

Once she heard about the College Credit Pathway, she quickly and easily decided it was the route to take. Monique felt it would be a faster way to earn her HSE. The CCP generally takes about one-and-a-half years to complete. All of Monique’s credits were completed within a year, with the exception of Math 151. TOCC provided a lot of support, however, she faced many challenges with her math instructors, which led to a delay in completing the program. Read more…
